I have just recently hooked up my new Pioneer DEH-2400F cd player into my 90 Beretta. And before I hooked my amp up to it, I tested it out with just my front speakers and it appeared to be working just fine.... until I turned my headlights on, and then it just plain shut off. I messed around with it and it continued to not turn on when my headlights/parking lights were on.

I proceeded to hooking my amp up to it and tested it out-- all appeared fine... until I turned my lights on. I hear a short, sharp static sound and I see some smoke rising from my cd player. The deck is still working fine (but I can't tell if it's still producing a small amount of smoke), but only if the lights aren't on.

Does anyone have an answer to why this is happening? I would appreciate it.

Jason

Did you use a wiring harness from Metra or American International or Schoche ? Did you test all your wires before you installed all the connections to make sure of the wire verification ? Sounds like you may have a grounding wire on your dimmer wire or the illumination wire . Did you tape off these wires if you did not use them for the Pioneer CD player ?

Please list the wires that you ended up using off the car and which wires you hooked them up to on the Pioneer CD player as this will help us diagnose your problem better. It may be something like a mismatched wire that can easily be fixed.

I am not totally familiar with much of the stereo terminology and equipment, so I am not quite sure what you mean by the wiring harness. I didn't test the wires because I left them unchanged from the previous CD player I had installed.

I do know that an orange wire (dimmer/illumination I believe) is not hooked to anything, and a light blue one is also not hooked up. And from what I can tell there is no short anywhere. I can get a list of what wires from the car are connected to the wires of the deck if that helps.

Yes, that would definitely help us determine what is wrong if there is a wiring problem . Thanks

Hi urza, it sounds like you have the radio ground connected to the vehicle's illumination lead. The vehicle's illumination lead will show ground when the lights are off and show 12V+ when they are on. Try disconnecting the ground wire from the radio and connecting it to the chassis of the vehicle.
