I'm trying to get the audio pinout for my 1999 sunfire GT.  I am attempting to soder an aux to the back of my cd player so I can use my zune to play mp3s.  Can anyone give me a hand?

Thanks

Is it a CD or a tape deck? Does it have provisions for a CD changer? This is not going to be an easy task at all. Are there Radio Shack stores in Canada?

Hey, thx for the quick reply.  It's a CD with no aux button.  We have stores called The Source which are owned by Circuit City which used to be Radio Shacks....  I don't think it has any changer provisions....   Any other ideas?

Do you have a sacrificial computer speakers that you can cut the 1/8 inch plug off of to use for testing?  Before you cut it off read this to see if you still want to try it.  You will need to remove the radio and get the CD mechanism out of the chassis.  Then I need to know how the mechanism is connected to the radio, it will be either a flat ribbon cable, or a set of plugs with actual wires.  The wires will make it easier, still possible with the ribbon, just a little more work.  You will have to plug the unit back into the car, with the CD mechanism in your hand.  If the CD does not work unmounted from the radio, you will need to connect a jumper from the chassis of the radio to the metal part of the mechanism.  Once you get the CD spinning, turn the volume up to make sure you can hear the CD playing.  Now turn the volume all the way down on the radio.  You need to cut the input plug off of the computer speakers, there will be 2 insulated wires inside of a braided shielding.  You need to strip back a foot or so of the outer jacket to expose the shield and the 2 insulated wires, carefully separate the braid from the wires.  Then strip a very short piece of the insulation off of one or both of the wires.  It will help if you are able to put some solder on the wire to make it kind of like a probe of a meter.  This is important in that we are going to be probing the connector that connects the mechanism to the radio.  Take the shield and twist it to put some solder on it also, then it needs to be connected to the chassis of the mechanism.  With the shield connected to the mech, and the CD playing, volume down on radio, touch the insulated wire to the first pin of the plug, and listen for music.  Repeat for each wire on the plugs, you should get audio on 2 of the wires.  When you find the audio, let me know what you find.  You will have to extend a few wires out of the radio and connect them to a Double Pole Double Throw toggle switch, this will allow you to switch from CD to I-Pod.   I have encountered more than a few decks that I was not able to get this to work correctly, so you may be doing all this for nothing.  There are some more details needed, I just did not want to continue typing until I was sure you were going to try it.

The computer speakers need to be of the amplified type.  You will have to power them with an extension cord or batteries.  They can not just be speakers.

Wow, sounds complicated, but I'm up for it.  Pretty funny, I know if my car was a few years newer I could just by an adapter to get this to work....
