If I remove the bose head unit in a 2001 Nissan Maxima and install a after market head unit, will I lose the cruise control feature on the steering wheel?
If so, how can I avoid this with a new head unit

The old unit must be plugged in but it may be moved to the trunk and install a new unit in its place. Buy the wirring harness for this. Make sure the volume is turnned down. And leave it there. Install the new unit in its place and just tap off of all the old wires.

I've never tested a cruise control after doing a radio install.....but I have done a few radio installs in Maximas like that, and you'd think if the cruise didn't work, the customers would have come back and complained.
I don't think Nissan ties the factory radio into any of the car's other systems; that is mainly something found in newer GM cars.
Of course, you'll still need a dash kit, wire harness, antenna adapter, and Bose interface---that's about $85 in parts, at least if you're paying full-sucker retail.
