I finally decided to replace the speakers in my 1997 Hyundai Elantra GLS. I had the radio replaced a few times but never did the speakers. Ok.....no biggie.....I've done all my previous cars' speakers so this should be no different, right? Haha......shame on me....I should have known.

I can't figure out if I have to take the rear deack off or just the speaker grilles. IF I take the speaker grilles off, they are not going back on like from the factory. If I have to remove the whole deck, I need to remove the side bolsters to the back seat, one on each side, as the seats themselves are split fold downs and these bolsters remain after folding down. I can't figure out how to remove them.

The speakers are screwed down from the top, so after I get the OEM ones out, I assume that the new Infinity 6953i's will fit right in there. I did notice that the OEM wiring harness is different from the new speaker setup. Are there adapters that I can pick up to match or should I just hardwire them like the old days?

1.  Carefully spread apart the gap between upright back and bottom rear seat cushions to access (2) 12mm bolts and remove them.

2.  Pop up front edge of rear seat bottom cushion to release clips and remove.

3.  Extract (4) remaining 12mm bols holding upright rear seat cushion and lift up to remove cushion.

4.  Use a panel removal tool to release (3) fasteners from the front edge of the rear deck.

5.  Remove (2) screw cover caps and screws from the sides of the rear deck brake light assembly, unplug, and remove.

6.  Extract (2) 10mm bolts from the rear deck brake light bracket from trunk and remove bracket.

7.  Unsnap rear deck, lift up, and remove.

8.  Extract (4) screws holding each speaker in, unplug, and remove speaker.

I forgot which speaker harness it is that you need but I think it's one of the toyota ones.  They definitely do make them and I would encourage you to use them.
