sub box Q

im trying to put together a system in my truck and im limited on cash, so when i walked into the old music shop the other day and asked the guy about a box i was shocked when he told me he had one he could give me for 30 bills. the catch? the moron who previously had the box (sealed) tried to port it himself and never finished the job. now all thats left is a nice sealed box with a hole in the top. so now i was wondering if i bought this box is there any way i could cover up that hole without getting any nasty distortion or bad playback? the guy suggested screwing a metal plate over the hole, and that just sounded stupid to me, but im new to car audio so what the hell do i know. well, sorry about the rant, but any info would help here, thanks

If it's a wood box you can take a piece of 5/8 MDF and cut it double the size of the whole. Use plenty of glue and screws and it should sound just fine. But for under $30 you could build your self a new sealed box, it’s not that hard. If you want some more info on box building let me know and I will help you out.

lol...never use metal in a sub box...the resonance that could be created would really annoying... as bberman stated, just use a piece of MDF and lots of glue and/or sealant... however, if the box is already carpeted, you may have to strip the carpet off and really work hard to get a clean surface to work with...the only other alternative would be to pull the sub out and cut the largest piece of MDF you can make fit through the hole for the sub and screw down through the top into the newly cut piece...
