Speaker Wire Size...What's Your opinion

I just thought I'd throw this out there and see what everyone think about this.  What guage speaker wire (in your opinion) would be best to run to speakers (if you had to run new wires)  being run off the head units internal amp to get the best sound quality without having to use and external amp?

8, 10, or 12 gauge for subs.
14, 16, or 18 gauge for mids and highs

I 2nd the squirrel, Just use commonsense the more wattage the larger the gauge. But to answer your question I would most likely use a 16 gauge wire

16 ga is more than adequate for a hu's internal amp...
