yea i just choose between the options, but it sounds like that may not be the main cause. Is it just a head unit, and that all shutting off? Is it overheating?

You may not need either one as xetmes said. There maybe a few things that you can check to see why it is shutting off when you turn up the volume. I have a few suggestions, one off them is the load on the speaker.   Do you have the right size wire going to your system? Do you have enough air circulating your equipment so that it’s properly cooled? These are just a few you may want to take a look at first.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it.what would help more?? -- posted image.

If your stereo shuts off, you may have a ground issue as well. Check to be sure that the amps are not just cutting out because they are being run hot.
