would a ported or a sealed enclosure be best for 1 12'' aluminum eclipse subwoofer? what is the best volume of the box? I also heard that you shouldnt put eclipses in a ported box. is this true?

You will want a sealed enclosure with a volume of .75-1.0 cu/ft.

I have no idea every time I have talked to them they suggest 2.0 sealed for SQ and .75 for SPL. I have built several different size enclosures and have found that it sounds best anywhere between .75 and 1.25. Personally I would go with 1.0 cu/ft

Also are the eclipses SQ or SPL. because if they are SQ i may get another sub because im not putting more than 1 sub and i want as much bass as i can get. But im sure the aluminum would be fine.

when the aluminums first came out, we begged and pleaded with eclipse for ported enclosure specs (they only recommend sealed for their subs)....finally got someone in the technical department who faxed us a design....we built the enclosure for a 15" driver.......it was a rather large enclosure, I cant remember the specs off the top of my head, but I do remember it hitting 145 off the dash in a 4runner....1000w orion amp pushing it to the limit....although they do not suggest it.....you can acheive crazy spl with ported enclosures.

Im running 2 titanium 15's right now, 2.0cu/ft each and they seem to be doing fine.

In a sealed enclosure they will still put out plenty of bass. They have a huge Xmas and can move lots of air while still maintaining excellent SQ

the difference in a sealed and ported box it that the sealed will have a better SQ, but not quite the SPL of the ported box.  however, a porperly built ported box can sound good in a car though.
toyota echo...perfect sound named vehicle
