I have a lightning audio 450 powering my 6x9s a 300 powering 1 10" and a jensen 1000 powering 2 10"s in a bandpass box.  I have 4 gauge to the trunk with a splitter into 3 8 gauges for my power no caps. 8 gauge grounds on all and 14 gauge speaker wire on all. my problem is the jensen goes into protect if i turn the gain up above 1/3rd of the way(4channel bridged into 2) The sound is nice and even but I want more bass out of those 10s. I have 14 gauge run to the bandpass but inside it is only 18 gauge. Am I maxed out or is something wrong with my wiring ??

what is the impedance of the subs and are they dvs or single? what model is the amp?

we should be able to help you better with that information

also you may want to upgrade to a 2ga or 1/0 from the battery just an extra thought shouldnt affect the amps protect mode.

I have no clue what the impedence is(el cheapo) subs.but the other day I smelled smoke and it was coming from those 2 10s. the magnet scalded me when i reached thru the port. I porbably need to buy alot better subs than these. And the amp is about 7 years old, so i have no clue whats its model number is.

Sounds like you have a sub issue.  If the subs are getting real hot they could be over powered and sending resistance back to the amp causing it to shut down before the subs blow.  Also, check your wires to see that they are not shaved and touching any where.

Try finding a friend that would let you try his/her subs in your car and see if your amp cuts off when you turn it up.
