I haev a van which i converted to a camper van. i need lights. 12 volt. can someone tell me is it ok to power the light by wiring direct to the battery. Or is this a more complex operation which i should stay well away from.

if you have 12V lights sure you can do this. run a line through the firewall to the inside of the van, and supply power as needed.
put a fuse about 18" from the battery to protect the vehicle.
If you plan to use the lights for extended periods on the same battery as you use to start teh vehicle, I recommend you also replace your battery with an Optima yellow-top battery or similar RG Deep-Cycle battery designed for extended current-draw applications.
