I recently bought a 91 ford taurus and i took the factory tape player out, cliped the harness's off, then noticed there were more wires coming out of the car than the cd player(cd is brand new from store). We tried a few hook ups, the speakers are easy, but the power is whats messed up, the CD light will come on, it will take a cd and eject, but wont play , and the rest of the stereo wont turn on or show any life. the 4 wires i have left in the car say, (orng/blk,blu/grn = illumination) (yel/blk = fuse box) (yel/grn = fuse box + ant pwr) and the wires i have left on my CD player harness are ( yel = constant 12v) (red = 12v) (blu = remote)

The cd player has harnesses but the taurus one are way off from them. Thanks

Why did you cut the harness?

Companies make harnesses to incorporate an aftermarket radio. Reconnect factory harnesses and get a metra wiring harness from a local shop.91 taurus stereo harness -- posted image.

Go here and look up the deck that you have. Match the pins to what you have on the harness and then rewire the stereo accordingly.

The yellow wire for your new radio should go to the light GREEN/ YELLOW in the old radio harness. This is the battery power. The red wire goes to the yellow/black car wire. This is switched ignition/accessory. The blue wire is used to activate power antenna's or amplifiers. Take your black ground wire from your new stereo and attach it to the vehicle's chassis to a clean area of bare metal. It would be best to get a wire harness as the other members suggested. The speakers may work, but if they aren't hooked up in phase ( positive to positive and negative to negative) for all speakers they won't sound the best. - poor bass

If my guess is correct, the plug kit from Metra is 70-1770. This kit will give you a grey and a black plug with wires on it. The wiring code for these wires is on the package and the colors match exactly for a majority of aftermarket radio harnesses. Did your car originally have two plugs in it? Did it have only one with wires and a second harness with a grey cable and steel square plug on it? If it is the latter, then you have a Ford Premium Sound system. You can either buy another interface to integrate the factory amp or rewire the car's speakers to bypass the amp.
