I have a diagram of a friends setup.  What we want to accomplish is to splice in a new RCA cable into the stock RCA cable running to the stock 8" sub.  The whole idea is to use the factory head unit and factory RCA wires to run to the amp, since there are no pre amp outputs on the factory head unit.  The question is, is this possible? and will it work? how good?  Any help appreciated.

DON'T try to "splice" RCA cables.  Use a Y-connector!  But your diagram seems to leave something out.  Where's the amp for the center 8" stock sub?

i havent actually seen the setup yet, but looking at theoretical options.  The stock sub doesnt have an amp, from what I understand it's connected directly to the stock head unit.  The main goal is to tap into the stock rca cable to run off that to an amp.  I'm not an expert but I'd still have to splice in the Y-connector to the stock wires wouldnt I? unless they make some kind of clamp on Y type.

This is possible as long as you use a line output converter to convert speaker signal to low level rca. I would keep the factory sub unhooked though as it will give up before your 10's and ruin the whole sound. If you do keep the factory sub, at least put a hi pass filter on it around say 80hz.

If the factory sub runs off an amp in the HU, then it will not have RCA's going to it.  It will be a speaker level signal.  You could tap into it and connect to the high level inputs on your amp or use an LOC (line out converter as suggested above.)

You might want to buy an LOC with higher power handling on its speaker level input because most of them dont like 30 watts or more. I dont know if the sub will go over this (probobly not) but just in case.
