I have a 96 Dodge Dakota extended cab. I just took out the defective head unit and installed a used after market Kenwood CD player. (The factory unit had lost controls, It played fine as long as I just used a portable cd-player and left the deck alone, but all speakers were fine) I disassembled the wiring harness from the last car it was in (mom-in-laws' and it was working fine) and re-wired per the diagram on top of the factory stereo. I hooked it up prior to doing this and got the same thing, but I can only get sound from the front speakers. Prior installation was in 94 (or 95) Dodge Intrepid and was installed by Best Buy, the positive leads to all 4 speakers have what looks like capacitors in-line. I have tried every setting the manual shows from balance/fade to speaker configuration and cannot get sound from the back. Fade and balance seem correct, when faded back just goes silent...... Anything you can help with, or should I throw in the towel and take to an installer?

try to use a 9 volt battery on the wires to your speakers, that will tell you if the wiring is correct to the spekers, disconnect from the head unit and put the battery on the speaker wires going to the speaker not the radio, if you hear a light pop in the speaker they are fine and the issue is somewhere in the head unit or the hook up from the head unit to the wires, you can also use a multimeter on the speker wires to measue output from the radio and the resistance of the spekers to make sure there is a strong connection

I was trying to get to the rear speakers to verify the wiring from the harness to the speakers, but could not open up the panels without doing damage to the truck. I don't have a haynes manual of anything to see where the tabs are, etc. I will try the 9-volt trick, and thank you...

Ok, So the nine-volt trick confirmed that the front speakers are good but got nothing on the rear, at the factory connector. I was told to look for a built-in amp. Would there not be more wiring to power a factory amp? Is there something special with these trucks I should be looking for?

The amp should be on the speakers themselves if you have the infinity system.

And may be turned on by the blue / white or blue wire from the Kenwood cd player (the remote on lead). It is usually hooked up to the white wire in the factory harness (black molex). You also might not have rear speakers, have a look in there with a flashlight to confirm it.

Tore the back to the cab up, found the amps wrapped around the speakers (and the Infinity badge on the door panels over the front speakers - oops). I will trace out all the wires in the morning, I did the tear-down on my lunch break. I did verify connectivity to one of the wires from the wire labelled "ant" on the factory HU so I guess this is to power the amp. One last question; Can I leave the amps hooked up with an after-market unit (Kenwood 4 x 45w) or will this over-drive it and sound like mud?
