OK, after much consideration I finally decided to buy a Type R 12, should be here in a few days.  What kind of box will the sub be happiest in?  I'm looking for something that slams w/out sacrificing SQ, so I'm thinking about building a slotted port design.  I've been told that the factory built box for the R is ridiculous for both SQ and SPL.  I'de like to try to copy that design, but need specs.  Any ideas fellas????

A slotted port design is the worst possible enclosure for SQ.  It is fantastic for SPL.  Type R's sound best in a 1.0 CUFT sealed enclosure and will give you mucho SPL as well...

Thanks, I definately trust your advice.  However, I think I'de like to have a little more boom than a sealed box can offer.  I don't compete or anything so I don't mind giving up a little SQ.  How about something in the middle-a standard ported box built to spec?  If you feel adamently about a sealed box, then that's what I'll do.

No, no, I don't feel adamantly one way or the other!  :)  Just letting you knw the options.  Slotted ports tend to be a little less musical than round ports, but some folks say they can't hear the difference.  Best boom for the buck is always ported, and the Type R can certainly boom.  Do what suits you, not me!

I checked the Alpine site for box specs.  It gives info for a sealed(.7-1. cuft) box, but nothing about ported.  Where can I find spec for a ported box?  Can I simply use the dimensions of the Alpine Type R factory built slot port box and substitute a 3 or 4" round port?  For all I know, the manual that comes w my sub may have the info I need, but I would like to have a box ready when the sub arrives.

For ported, I believe the Type R likes about 2.0 to 2.1 CuFt.  Hey Alpine Guy, where are you?  :)

im here, haha  Iv had box's made for me with 2 cube's of air space and tuned to about 45hz, it was stupid loud, and still a little musical.   I personally have had pretty much the same spl output from this sub in either a 1.25 cube box, or a ported box,  they only diff is like 2 db which you wont be able to notice.

If you feed 300 wrms to it, sealed is the way to go, it moves alot without much power.

Hey Alpine guy!!  I have a few more ?s for ya.  What do you reccomend for rms to a Type R 12?  I've heard they want more than 300w.  For now, I'm using a (cheap) 600w, 2 ch Lanzar amp, will this be enough?  I'll be getting an Alpine amp soon, which do you reccomend?  I like the MRV420, 340wx1 @ 4 ohm bridged (I bought the 2 ohm sub).  Does Alpine make a 1ohm bridged stable amp?  If not, can you reccomend another good amp for the job?  Thank you in advance, I really appreciate your inputBest box for Alpine Type R? -- posted image.
