I am trying to install a deck into a 1968 Mustang (straight six), but I can't get teh darn thing to turn on. I know I need to run a constant and I tapping into the existing accessory wire for the stock deck, but nothing. I tried two different decks just to make sure that the one wasn't fried. Any suggestions would really help (both the install and my friends wallet). Also, if it helps, the car only has the one center speaker with the stock radio (not even a stereo). Thanks!

Just to clarify, I ran a seperate constant to the battery, and then tapped the accessory wire from the stock radio to the accessory wire on the decks.

Try connecting the head unit's accesory wire to the ACC wire in the steering colum and the ground it to the battery (do this just to test it). If it works then try moving to the ground so clean (scrape off the paint) area on the firewall or floor.

Another to consider is most older fords are common ground.  New HU won't play with the speaker wires in this configuration.  I'm not sure if this is your situation, just something to consider.

So would I have to hook up a new set of speakers to the HU?

No, just rewire them.  If they are common grounded, they will all be grounded to the chassis.  you will need to run speaker wire from the new HU to each speaker.

you may not be able to if they are a self grounded speaker tho....many of the old ( i'm dating myself here ) Chryslers and Fords used a single terminal self grounded speaker...and you would have to replace these if that is the case..... if the speaker has two distinctly different terminals on it then it shouldnt be a problem... if only one terminal then you need to replace them....

also, make sure you dont foolishly hook up R & L to the center dash speaker ( i've seen that done a few times )
