what actually happens when you blow a speaker...might be a dumb Q but still i would like to know to make sure...my friend and I are in this arguement and i wanna actually bring him to my pc to show him what others say on it

you mean how does it sound or what physically happens to the speaker itself??

The voice coils or voice coil former melts due to heat caused by clipping of a signal or excessive use without allowing the speaker to cool down. The speaker cone when pressed on usually makes raspy sound as it moves in or out, in some cases the speaker cone will actually seize. An open is when there is a break in the voice coil winding, thus the speaker will not show any resistance and the cone may move just fine but no worky.

Maybe you could post both points of view so we can let you know who is right.  Forbidden's post is correct.  But I suppose a torn or seperated spider, tripple joint, etc. tinsel leads breaking, or the driver coming out of the gap and the former sitting on top of the pole piece could be considered "blowing a sub" as well.
