2001 Jetta Monsoon system

My son has an 01 that has the amp under the rear deck. My buddy has an 01 Jetta with the Monsoon system, but there is no amp under the rear deck. He has had shops tell him that he cannot replace the stock deck unless he replaces all of the speakers because they have their own amp (or something like that). I am telling him that is a load of crap...but I thought I'd get some professional advice.

i also just seached jetta fourm and foun lots of in fo on the mosoon amps and systems  and not once did any body say any thing about indevidule amps all replies to questions said under rear deck.  this site here had the most info.
