97 jeep grand cherokee with a valet model 561r.

I want to keep the starter from locking the car.  I turned off the Ignition lock feature and that kept it from locking after I manually started the car with the key.  The car still locks itself when started with the remote and then you insert the key turn it and press the brake.  How can I keep the starter from ever locking the car?  While still keeping the lock/unlock feature of the remote functional.   Thanks for help on this one.

Locks after starting with the remote?
That sounds like something that would have been done on purpose during installation, rather than a programming issue.
Who installed it, and what special module (if any) was used for the doorlocks?

I had it installed by the shop I bought the starter from.  it doesn't lock immediately when you start the vehicle with the remote, but when you turn the key and press the brake to drive it locks itself.  there was no extra module needed to lock/unlock the car.  I want to disable the self locking feature.

So what you're saying is when you put the car into gear it locks? Or it locks if you open the door and turn the ignition on with the key?
First case is a factory Jeep feature and you'd have to check your owner's manual to see if there's any way to disable it.
Second case - you may not have programmed it correctly. Ignition controlled lock and ignition controlled unlock are totally separate.
Lock I think is program option 13 or 18, depending on how old your 561R is.
