Hi,

I'm instaaling a Viper 591VX into my wife's 1997 Ford Explorer. I have two questions concerning the install.

- The instructions say to cut the starter wire and splice the Purple + (Starter ouput) wire into the starter side of the wire, and splice the Green (Starter Kill) wire into the ignition side of the wire. My question is do I need to use this starter wire/feature?   If not,  how would I need to hook it up?  My concern is that in a failure of the RS the vehicle would not start and the wife would be stranded.

- Secondly, the vehicle wiring information does not specify if a resistor is required on the Lock o r Unlock circuits.  Is there any more information available  on this?

No resistors needed on that vehicle.
If you don't want to cut the starter wire, just connect the purple wire to the starter wire. Tape up the green wire.

Thanks for that information. I installed the unit last night and initial test indicated a couple problems that I need to research.

- First - as soon as I turn on the ignition the horn starts beeping and the lights continually flash.  It would seem to me that the vehicle maybe has a built in alarm system that I am not aware of or I have not set up the programming options properly or have a wire crossed.

- Secondly - The remote has battery power seems to be unresponsive.  The instructions say the remote comes "Learned" Is there a sinc function that I need to accomplish with this Viper ?

I am going to spend time today to go over the installation instruction today but would appreciate any troubleshooting  ideas.

THX

i see a few areas of concern for your wiring.
first: the RED / white heavy gauge wire should go to 12v constant like the other red wires. it looks like you have it hooked to the starter wire
second; the brown wire that you have going to the yellow/lt green at the steering column, are you trying to do horn honk with this? try unhooking it for now and see if you horn still flips out when you start it.
third: are you using a bypass? if not you will need an extra key and the dei 556UW bypass or 556SW bypass

should only need a bypass if it's and Eddie Bauer or Limited. Ford Explorer XL, XLT, and Sport don't need a bypass manf'd in 1997 (just traded in my '97 Explorer XLT in may. sounds like you still need to connect the Factory Alarm Disarm. it's the lt. GREEN/ black on the viper to:
Alarm Disarm          DARK GREEN/ VIOLET          (-)          DRIVER'S KICK PANEL

Everything looks right on your wiring, as long as like soundsecurity says, both the heavy red, and the heavy RED / white, should both be receiving constant power.
Many Viper units do have some kind of basic alarm built in, I'm not sure if yours does. But it does sound like it.........if it's armed and you turn the ignition on with a DEI system, yes, the lights and horn will go off.
You said the remote is unresponsive, but generally, you would unlock the doors with the remote to stop the alarm from sounding.
Probably at this point your first thing should be to get that remote working. And yes, it should already be programmed to the unit.
Maybe the remote is just defective, but check a few things. Inspect the entire length of the antenna cable to see that it's not pinched or cut. Also, use the instructions to try to re-program the remote.

I stand corrected

The RED / White heavy gauge wire is looped in the connector and is connected from the factory to the Red wire which is connected to constant 12V. I did not cut the wire and connect it to the RED / light blue as I had indicated.

Be sure your antenna is connected to the brain correctly. This will make the remotes not work at all....

Thanks for everyone for the answers to my questions. As it turned out I had it wired correctly but did need to program the remote.

Thanks again!
