I would like to install a remote start on my wife's 2001 Saab 9-3. I don't care about the immobilizer or the alarm. I was thinking she could just press the unlock/disarm button before pressing the remote start button. My question is about the RFID key. (Not even sure if I have one or if it is an RFID or other type.) If so, would I have to take the chip out and leave it in the car or use another key? Or, is it even an issue if the alarm is disarmed...meaning is the rfid not active if the alarm is not on?

sounds like you're wanting to be lazy/cheap....
you will have to give up a key. And you will have to disarm the factory alarm.
A DMM is a beautiful thing.

Not looking to be lazy or cheap. Just looking for info. I have been out of the business for a number of years but I too am or was MECP Certified master installer. I just thought someone could save me some time figuring it out myself.

Won't work because the factory remote normally doesn't have the range! Therefore you are going to to have to approach the car so you might as well jump in and turn on the key!
ANY R/S will need to by-pass the immobiliser system and the best for this vehicle is a 556U wired as per its instructions for European vehicles, i.e. no antenna ring, cut and join.

But if I did sacrifice a key and left the transponder in the car it should work correct?

To clarify...I have a stand alone remote start unit, DEI, and I was looking to use the supplied remotes. Not the stock one.

Yes, by transponder I'm assuming you mean the factory RFI immobiliser and a by-pass such as the 556.
