Hello all, new to the forum in search of some answers on the 791XV unit made by DEI/Viper.
I've had this unit in my 2001 Mazda Protege for over 5 years, but never really bothered to understand what all the wires do. I paid a friend who worked at Best Buy to install it and just kind of forgot about it, but a number of things were never quite right about it so I decided to try to fix them now that I know a thing or two about wiring and am comfortable with soldering.
Here are the specific questions I have for you all:
1. How important is the heavy gauge orange accessory wire? Mine isn't hooked up, that was the first thing I noticed when I got under the dash. I'm assuming this was done because the accessory wire in my car is also a 12V constant, and it is hooked up to one of the red heavy gauge wires. Is that ok or should I also tap the orange wire into the accessory/12V constant wire?
2. How do I gain control of my rear window defogger? Pressing star+aux+lock is supposed to toggle the rear defogger, but it doesn't do anything on my car. Is that because the orange accessory wire isn't hooked up? The 'H3/1 blue/white 2nd status output' wire says something about a defogger option in the install manual, but I don't quite know how to wire that up. It would be a really convenient feature to have.
3. My car is a manual, and for years I had to consciously make sure that I kept it in N with the e-brake up to prevent it from being started in gear on accident. Well, I recently found it that even though it's a manual it has a neutral safety switch, so I wired it up properly and it now only starts in N. But, the clutch switch also needs to be bypassed to fool the ECU into thinking the clutch is depressed, so my old installer wired the purple heavy gauge starter wire to one of the clutch cut wires (yellow/black if interested) to bypass it. Everything works great except that he left the green anti-grind wire unhooked, and I think that would also be a good feature to have installed both for security and to prevent accentual starter damage.
So my specific questions on this part are this:
3a. Can I just cut this wire and connect the green and purple wires to opposite ends like I'm supposed to with the starter wire, or should I wire them to the "true" starter wire and interrupt the clutch switch with a relay?
3b. If I need to interrupt the switch with a relay, which wire should I use to signal to the relay? Is that what the 'status output' wire is for?
4. Is it possible to wire or program this unit to act as a turbo timer? My car is also turbocharged, and I know if I press aux+star it will go into turbo timer mode and shut down after 1 minute. What I'm wondering is if it possible to configure it so it goes straight into turbo timer mode when I just shut it off normally with the key, without pressing any buttons on the remote?
5. What is dome light supervision supposed to do? This wire was also left unhooked by my old installer, and I found on a number of sites to simply use the door trigger for the dome light supervision feature. But I don't really see a difference in the behavior of the dome light since wiring it up, so I'm wondering what this is for? And I did go into the programming options and enable it using the valet switch programming.
6. This is an easy one. What is the pink/white programmable ignition/accessory wire for?
Thank you all very much! I know this is A LOT to ask on my first post, but I thought I would get it all out there right away. If you guys could help me with any or all of these, I would greatly appreciate it!

1. If things work there's no need to fix anything. An accessory wire won't be a constant 12v's.
2. You find the wire that turns your rear defogger on or off, it may be a pulsed signal or it may be latched. Once you find it and determine which of the two it is, if it's a negative output you can wire it to the blue/white 2nd status and reprogram menu #3 feature #11 to the two or three chirp setting. If it's a positive output you will need to use a relay to convert polarities.
3. The heavy gauge purple is actually connected to the "true" starter wire. If you want to implement anti-grind and starter kill you would cut this wire (where the purple is connected now) and starter side would be connected to purple and clutch side would be connected to green.
4. Unfortunately no, turbo timers don't activate automatically. There's an inherent safety risk in being unable to stop a motor on command (Turning off the ignition).
5. Dome light supervision turns on the dome light when unlocking the vehicle to illuminate the inside of the vehicle on approach. Some cars do this from the factory so the alarm doesn't need to be wired to do it.
6. It powers ignition switch wires for remote start purposes. It's function is reprogrammable from either ignition or accessory giving versatility to the installer. Like #1, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Thank you for your speedy and thorough response catback, I really appreciate it!
A couple follow up questions for you if you don't mind.
2. So does that mean the star+aux+lock option is controlled by the blue/white 2nd status wire? Or does that function run through the orange heavy gauge wire? My understanding is that the two status output wires come on as soon as the remote start is engaged, so if I wired the blue/white to the defogger then it would come on every time correct? I'd much prefer to have control over it through my remote if possible.
3. According to the wiring schematics I've found for my specific car, the "true" starter wire is a BLACK/ blue in the ignition harness. The wire that is currently spliced into runs from the clutch sensor. However, if you're certain that I can simply splice into that wire with the green and purple to gain anti-grind function, I'll do it that way.
6. So how is that pink/white wire different from the two heavy gauge ignition wires? Is it there in case your car has a 3rd ignition wire? Would this be a wire I could use to power my radio during remote start for example? I don't really want that function, but just using it as an example.
And I'm not here in search for the "perfect" install, I understand that some wires can and should be left alone. However, I've realized that for years this system has been under utilized due to partial installation by the original installer, and I am just trying to understand all of its functions so I can take advantage of them all for full convenience.
Thank you again! :)

The rear defogger function is controlled on the blue/white 2nd status/defogger wire. Your understanding is correct about the status wires, but as I said defogger functionality has to be programmed to be used and after which the 2nd status wire will function differently.
The wiring info for your car would be correct but the starter wire runs from the ignition switch to the clutch pedal and then to the starter. So the purple wire is on the starter wire, only further down the chain in order to bypass the clutch switch.
You have to more specific when you say "heavy gauge ignition wires." There are many heavy gauge "ignition" wires (ignition meaning wires that get wired to the ignition switch wires). The pink/white through programming can be a 2nd ignition or a 2nd accessory. Pink being 1st ignition and Orange being 1st Accessory. Once programmed to be a 2nd ignition or accessory it behaves just like the Pink or Orange it's mimicking the only difference being it takes in power on the RED / white 12v feed and of course powers a 2nd ignition or accessory wire. In short, it's there to power a 2nd ignition or accessory wire in the car. It could power your radio by powering up the ignition wire that supplies power to the radio and other accessories.
If you haven't already, I recommend browsing the installation guide for your alarm/remote start for information on it.

I see, thanks for the explanation on the starter wire and the 2nd accessory/ignition, that makes more sense now :)
But if you don't mind, I'd like a little more clarification on the blue/white defogger wire.
Do I need to use a relay for this function or can I just the blue/white straight to the defogger? And how do I know if it's latched or pulsed for programming purposes? Also, what does pressing the star+aux+lock buttons do.. I'm assuming it toggles the blue/white wire to come on or off during remote start? Otherwise wouldn't the rear defogger come on after every single remote start? That would be a little inconvenient in the summer months..
And I have definitely read the wiring guide front to back numerous times. If it wasn't for that document I wouldn't know anything about this, but unfortunately some of it is beyond my understanding.. hence why I decided to join this forum to learn from the experts. I'm not the most electronic savvy person but I have the technical know-how for wiring (I can splice, solder, etc.) so I'm just trying to understand how all this works. The guide is great, but some features are more descriptive than others..

Whether you need a relay or not depends on the vehicles rear defogger wire that you find. The blue/white is capable of putting out a ground that can carry 200mA of current. Higher current or the need for +12v instead of ground will require a relay.
Latched or pulse will be part of testing the vehicles rear defogger wire. If the wire sends a single pulse when you turn on (or off) the defogger then you will set the viper for pulsed defogger. If the wire outputs a constant ground or +12v the entire time the defogger is on then you would set the viper for latched defogger.
The remote can toggle the defogger on and off during a remote start, it also automatically comes on during a remote start when the temperature is below 55ºF.
When the blue/white is programmed to operate the defogger it no longer functions as a status wire. Like wise when it IS set as a status wire the remote can not turn it on and off as if it was controlling the defogger.
