I have a 2010 Toyota Tacoma that a previous owner had a Viper 4103XV and a DEI XK05 bypass installed approximately 2011. I purchased the Tacoma 4 months ago and the remote start worked perfect. About 2 weeks ago it just quit working properly. When you activate the remote start the truck cranks the engine 3 separate times but the engine wouldn't start. I read a lot of old posts here and on Tacomaworld.com forums trying to figure it out.
I have narrowed it down to the XK05 bypass module. If I hold up a key to the ignition or even leave a key in the ignition, I can get the remote start to start the engine on the first try. So I found the bypass module under the dash. I checked the red wire and ground in harness for constant 12v. I have 12.36 volts in the harness. When I plug the harness back into the module I get the red LED to light up for a short period and then it goes out. When I turn the ignition on with a key the LED does not light up. Any ideas why the LED won't light up even though I have constant 12 volts in the harness?
Prior to the bypass module quitting, I installed a set of HID headlights in my truck and I have the hood open alot. I also started the truck and shut it off in short bursts quite a bit. Would this have any effect on the module?
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the bypass is fried.
Yes, the new HID headlights installation may have hastened its demise due to inductive voltage spikes from the ballasts.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Makes sense to me. It did quit at exactly the same time as the HID install weekend.
I don't want to wire up a different bypass module as its winter weather here and I am currently on crutches.
Any suggestions of where to purchase a new PK05 that will plug right in?

Unfortunately there are two flavors of Firmware that could have been flashed on the XK05 module
and used for your 2010 Tacoma application, PKT2 and 5.PKTI. You will need to check to see if
some wires run to the transponder plug in the steering column or over to a 35 Pin plug behind
the glove box. Take a photo of the XK05 and the wires used and where they go and we can assist,
if needed.
Have you tried a XK05 module reset and then a reprogram? That would be my first try.
Here is a link to the PKT2 firmware install guide :

Soldering is fun!

To update and resolve this post I did the following:
I checked behind the glovebox and found no wires running to the bypass module. I googled pictures of XK05 and figured out that mine was the 5.PKTI version. My truck has the non-G key, just a dot on it. I tried to reprogram my original module to the key and it failed. But I could get the remote start to work if I left the key in the ignition and used the remote to start it. Adding all that up, I decided to purchase a new 5.PKTI module off ebay already programmed for my truck and key version.
Tonight I followed the instructions Kreg posted above, plugged in my module, inserted the key, and programmed it. It worked the first time! I tested the remote start and it worked again!
Thanks for all the help, especially Kreg. I am back and running properly again.
