Hello all. I attempted to install a remote start (CrimeStopper CS2011) in my sister 98 Cavalier. I'm pretty sure the car does not have PassLock since the dash lights give no indication of security. I used the wiring chart found in this site's database. I have also searched the site for similar problems but found no info.
My problem is this: The car will start via the remote and run for a second and then shut off. I double checked my wiring and all looks good. I think I may be missing another ignition wire. The four wires that I used are the Red (+12v), Pink (Ignition1) , Yellow (Starter) , and White (Ignition2.) All are 10/12ga wires.
Anybody know of any other ignition wires that I may have missed?
Thanks

Your vehicle does have Passlock II. You will need a bypass kit to fix the problem. It seems you have got the correct ignition wires though.

It seems  working fine, just after a second the security kicks in and turns it off.  By the way, its passlock 1, not 2.

So pick up a bypass and your set.

Yes, I believe 1998 models came with PassLockI. Shouldn't I have a security light that flashes on the instrument panel after I turn the key on if the car has PassLock? Do all GM cars come with theft security from the factory?

it is on the bottom right of the dash, it says theft system in red letters...  unless the LED is burned out.  the 95+ cavaliers have a passlock II engine dissabling system with a bulb check wire.  use DEI part 555L.

another thing that is cool about being a cavalier owner is that the car comes with a messican guy named Manual.  in his index he tells you to turn to pages 2-12 and 2-75 where he explains the passlock system our cars are, yes in fact are, equipped with a passlock engine disabling system.

Alpine Guy is correct, you have Passlock I system and remember to hook up the BLACK bulb test wire for the Passlock I bypass modules. If you have not purcahsed a bypass module yet, then do so and after you hook it up and you have learned the proper code to the module, post your results.

Really...all cars come with a manual? Gee, thanks for that advice. Maybe if the previous owner had not relieved my car of the manual, I could have figured it out. I've searched numerous times on the web and found conflicting information. That's why I ask my question here. Other automakers offer anti-theft as an option.
So, just to make sure:
1. All 1998 Cavaliers have passlock anti-theft.
2. I need to bypass the passslock in order to rs the car.
Thanks to all those who helped.

Some 1995 Cavaliers have Passlock I. All 1996 through to 1999 Cavaliers ahve Passlock I. 2000 and up Cavaliers have Passlock II. You will need a bypass to interface with the system. Ask the supplier if their brand has had any tech bullentins regarding wiring up the module to a Passlock I vehicle. Some of these modules had an intermittent problem with a backwards voltage spike on the starter wire. It may be necessary to wire up a anti-grind relay on the stater wire to prevent this.
