I have a confusing one.  I was installing a two-way remote start, keyless, alarm (Panther 5000) in an 03 Toyota Camary yesterday and could not get it to remote start.  My testing shows that it could be either a bad brain, or I have the wrong starter wire.

First of all because of some installs coming back we stopped t-tapping our ignition wires on remote starts and now solder them.  So I know the connections were VERY solid.  I was putting the unit in remote start mode and metering voltage to the starter wire during the sequence.  The meter jumped from open, but never got a reading.  Then the second time during the same sequence it jumped to 12 volts just long enough to register.  The alarm is supposed to put out 12 volts for a second, which it didn't seem to do, then try again for 2 seconds, then 3.  All three attempts the 12 volts showed up the same amount of time.  But even with this short voltage the vehicle never tried to crank.  When I had the alarm programmed for RPM sense it would think it had started.  I have the tach wire connected to the non-common side of an injector, which gave me around 1 volt AC when metered.  So the above seems to point toward a bad brain I think since it doesn't seem to be working right.  BTW, voltage tests were done at my first solder joint from the brain.

Now the other confusing part.  I used the very large BLACK/ white wire under the dash for the starter wire.  It meters 12 volts when starting, and when cut the vehicle won't start.  But when I tap 12 volts to that wire the starter won't try to turn over.  But when I put the key in the ignition it does start.  The same wire seems to come from the ignitions switch and I tapped it there for 12 volts with the same results.  I don't see any other BLACK/ white wires anywhere, or lage awg wires that could be the starter.

So does anyone have any ideas?  If I was unclear about something, please let me know and I will try to clear it up.  But I need to find an answer by monday.

Thanks for any help.

I'm somewhat confused, but I think there are a couple of other things that you could check before concluding that the brain of the alarm is the problem.

First, I'm assuming that you already know that this vehicle has a "transponder" anti-theft system and you will have to bypass in order for the remote start to work properly.

Secondly, this vehicle has 2 starter wires (BLACK/ White and BLACK / YELLOW).  Your starter wire off the brain of the alarm must be joined to both wires for the remote start to work properly as well.  I know that your ignition wire is BLACK / YELLOW, but there should also be a second BLACK / YELLOW wire for the started.  Locate these wires and test accordingly.

I hope that this helps......good luck

yes you have 2 starter wires also a keysense wire that needs to be hooked up to disarm the factory alarm

STARTER 1BLACK/ WHITEIGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
STARTER 2BLACK / YELLOWIGNITION SWITCH HARNESS
KEYSENSEBLUE ( - )IGNITION SWITCH HARNESS  *1

*1 - Using the status output wire from the remote start to trigger this wire will disarm the factory alarm without unlocking the doors.

remember to check all your wires with a dmm not a test light!!

Aghh.....why does everybody spell Camry with an 'a' in it. That drives me nuts at my shop....
Only the 6 cylinders have a transponder key.
As stated above, the car won't crank unless both starter wires are hooked up. You only need to do a starter kill on the main starter wire to prevent the car from starting.
These cars are very easy. Tach can usually be found in the diagnostic plug under the dash, but that varies depending on which model it is. Usually BLACK/ orange.

Thanks guys.  I wasn't expecting them to use a smaller awg wire for the starter, and I ran out of large awg ones. Remote Start troubles -- posted image.  I'm still in the learning phaze with alarms, so please forgive me if my questions seem easy.  Even after so many remote starts under my belt, I still have so much to learn.

It actually doesn't have  the transponder.  I can start it with his generic key with no black coating (so no chip).  I wish I had known that before I had the customer bring in an extra key, and found out our shop was out of the bypass units and had to buy it from another shop.

Tach I pulled off one of the non-common injector wires.  It metered around 1 volt AC at idle, so it should work.  I'll remember that tip about the diagnostic plug having tach.  That will be much easier to wire to on most vehicles if it works.  I'll also remember next time how Camry is spelled.
