Is it common for resistors to burn out? How long do they usually last before they go bad?

I have never had one come back, did you you use it on an alarm?

and was it 1/2 watt 5% or a 1/4 watt?

Yes, it was used on an alarm. It is a 1/2 watt. I was just curious of their reliablity and life span. I don't have one that has gone bad, I was just curious as to whether I should put it so that it can be accessed easily in case it does go out.

Suggestion number one: Read up on ohm's law https://www.the12volt.com/ohm/ohmslaw.asp .
I've a feeling that you've exceeded the max current capacity and it'll burnup again. What are you using this resistor for? Connected to what circuit and feeding it how?

Big dog's right.
