hi

i have a situation where a factory recall has caused the remote starter not to start the vehicle anymore , the e.c.m. was flashed

the dealership warned the customer this could happen

can anybody tell me how this affected the remote start and how to fix it

thanks

Hi Quincy, it's highly unlikely that swapping the ECM alone caused the remote start to no longer function.  Most likely the dealership disconnected some of your connections. Double check your connections and let us know what you find.

Yah !! Those " TECHNICIANS " at the dealerships probably disconnected the wiring or the fuse on the RS unit. Check all connections as well as the antenna.

No, the dealer is actually right, at least kinda.  We've had boatloads of these vans come back after the recall.

At my shop, almost all of our work is for local car dealers.  As you might imagine, we've been installing stuff on many 2003 cars for months now, even though no tech info is available.....we just find all the wires ourselves.  And if you remember, the Chrysler minivans were completely redesigned for the 2001 model year.

The 2001-up vans have two starter wires---one is the normal (yellow) positive-trigger type.  The second start wire is PURPLE / brown, and needs to see ground through a 180-ohm resistor.  So far, this is the only car in the world with a negative-through-a-resistor starter wire.  No installer would have even thought to look for such a wire.

But anyway, for whatever reason, the remote start would still work on the 2001s, even if the installer neglected to hook up the PURPLE / brown wire.

Sometime recently, Chrysler has been recalling the 2001s to update the ECM.  After the recall is performed, the remote starter doesn't work anymore......but only because the PURPLE / brown was never hooked up to begin with.

Once the installer makes the proper connections to the wire, the remote start will again work normally.  How this is done all depends on what type of remote starter you're using.

Audiovox tip:  If you're installing an Audiovox/Pursuit/Prestige remote start, you'll notice that it has a low-current BLACK / YELLOW "ground pulse while cranking" output.  Tie this wire directly into the Caravan's PURPLE / brown, with NO resistor and NO relay.  It seems to put out just the right amount of current, and the remote start will work perfectly.
