I would like to announce that I just installed a New Code Alarm CA-540 into my 1989 Chevrolet Pickup (c/k 1500). (Note: this was my first install.) Code Alarm CA-540 ( Remote Start ) -- posted image. I should of just thrown away there installation book!!! It is a joke. The reason I went with a code alarm is I had one on a 1996 Ford Mustang. It was a very good alarm which was pro installed. I am by far an expert!!! The installation manual contradicts is self. On certian parts such as the "Car Start Harness". Praise the lord for this site or I would of never figured out how such things as relays ect. work. I needed a few of them for this install to work properly.

Relay: for the solid viotet (Basic Wire Harness CA-540) to the starter side wire. You will also need a Diode for this.(Note: Solid violet is looking for a ground. If not grounded the next relay will not work.)

Relay: for the so CALLED solid red 12+(Car Start Harness CA-540) I found that the solid red 12+ is actually the remote start (-) pulse when the the remote start is actuated from the remote on your key ring.

Now don't take this info to heart. Because, Your Code Alarm install manual may be correct. Please test all wires with a digital meter first. I knew somthing was not right when the remote did not start the truck and was blowing my curtousy light fuse. It took a lot of testing and reaserch. I finally figured it out. No offense, but I would recommend you have your install checked out by a pro. I guess it may be possible that your harness has the wires in wrong spots or something, but it sounds like there is something seriously wrong with the install. I'm curious to know what wire from the module you connected to your starter wire in the vehicle? Also what did you connect the orange wire in the car start harness to? Does your heat/ac work with the remote start? How about the thin BLACK/ white in the car start harness?

Funny thing....all works well. Heater, AC, door locks, ect. Black and white is to my nutral saftey switch. I called Code Alarm tech support. They went thru the system with me on the phone. Tech support said it was a defective module. I received new module from place of purchase. Hooked module up and still did the same thing. So I commeted to troble shoot my self.... I unplugged every wire in the car start harness till I found the one that was blowing the fuse. I hooked a meter to that wire (Red 12 v+)and found it was giving a nagative pulse. Hmmmm.... I am know expert but, I know it is not suppose to do that. Ecspacilly when the install manual calls for it be hooked to 12 volts. I then hooked to relay. I unhooked the solid violet and tested my new relay with meter as I remote started the truck. The relay did not work. So I grounded the solid violet and retested my relay. It worked! I then hooked the viotet to a relay so that I could still use the key to start the truck. All works well! I don't know why!?! Maybe the system had worng harness.....

Two bad modules in a row with the same problems, versus the same incorrect install producing the same problems, I can tell you what I'd put my money on. Either way I guess if everything is working and you feel ok with it then you don't have to worry. Good job on the install Code Alarm CA-540 ( Remote Start ) -- posted image.

I understand where you are coming from. If I were to read this from another veiw I would think the same way. Are you familar with the Code Alarms? Are the wiring harness all the same? Or simuliar enough to get a worng harness?

I've installed 100's of Code Alarm products and have never seen this problem or done anything remotely similar do what you had to do. Most of the newer Code use the same 3 harnesses that you have on your unit. If they are not the same, they are completely different plugs/pins/colors/etc. Not much chance you somehow got harnesses from a different system or they wouldn't even plug into the module. Like I said if your comfortable with it than I guess you don't have anything to worry about. If you don't feel right about it, post or PM me a list of exactly what wires you have going to what (including your relay configurations, and I will see if there is anything obvious.
