96 Honda Accord - Remote Problem

Hi Everyone,

I've been like a fly on a wall watching this site and now I have a problem myself. Second hand 96' Honda Accord. All electrics working, doors, windows, central locking etc. but the remote central locking won't work. (a) How can I test the hand unit to check if it's transmitting (the led works). (B) can anybody give me a hand to sort this problem.

Stupid question here..... did you try replacing the battery in the remote control ?

New batteries, power LED is working but how do I check if it's actually transmitting? after that I'll work on the receiver If anybody can help.

I'm assuming this is an aftermarket system if it has an LED ..... am I correct ? If this is the case then if the transmitter works then the LED will blink a different pattern after you arm and disarm the car.

It's a factory fitted I.R. system and the LED is just a power/in-use indicator. The infra red freq. used is part of the invisible spectrum and if the equipment does not work (in my case - remote unlocking) how can you find out which is failing the transmitter or the reciver?

This is a factory unit, fitted by Honda on the production line (European Plant) It's in the cars instruction book. The receiver is part of the courtsey light cluster, it is NOT an aftermarket system. The central locking and everything else works fine, its just the remote unit fails to operate the locks and I'm trying to find a way to establish if its the transmitter unit or the receiver unit in the car thats causing the problem.

You might have to go to the dealer to program the remotes again.. Wait I jus thought of something. Did you install or anything sparkrecently.. even if you didn't, check all your fuses in the car. The kick panel of the driver's side and under the hood. Hopefully this is the problem.

Thanks a million for your imput. Thank God for sites like this and Google. I FOUND THE ANSWER! for anyone testing an infrared remote control. The viewfinder of digital camera movie or still can "see" the invisible infrared range of the spectrum. All you have to do is point the infrared lens (don't mix up with power LED) at a digital screen and you can see the pulse - it works I tested 5 remote controls and could see them working and guess what! my Honda RC was the only one to fail.
