Hey guys,
A couple friends of mine want remote starts on their cars that are manual. As of now i've refused to do them cause i dont trust people in not putting htem in gear and the units designed for manual transmissions are not trustworthy. I've heard of using magnetic read switches on the shifter so that when it outta gear the car can remote start but when its in gear the unit thinks the hood is open. I've never even seen a magnetic reed switch before and would like to see how these things are use and more information on them. anything would be great.. thanks alot

Compustar and astroflex, as well as a number of others make units designed for manual tranny.

They work perfectly, unless you leave your windows down and someone reaches thru and puts it into gear!

The units that work with manual transmissions are quite safe. They have to be set up into reservation mode each time you exit the vehicle. If you're really afraid of someone reaching in an open window then install a promimity sensor that when triggered takes the remote starter out of reservation mode. I personally wouldn't want to leave my windows open if I intended to remote start my vehicle anyway. What would be the point? If it's hot out then starting it for the A/C to cool off the car would be a big waste of time and gas.
