I have a 1994 Dodge Intrepid and in the two years that I have owned it I have replaced the starter 4 times!  Is this because of my audio system?  I have an MTX 81000D  amp running two MTX 8000 12" subs, and an MTX 6304 running Infinity 6x9s, 5 1/4 componants and 3 1/2 it the dash.  Any feedback would be great.  Thank you.

It could be alot of different possibilities. When was the last time you:

  • changed your plugs
  • changed your plug wires
  • changed your battery
  • changed your alternator
  • Try increasing the size of your ground to your battery

I changed the plugs and wires within the last few months, and when I installed the system, I also upgraded the ground coming off of the battery to the same gauge as the power wire which is 0/1 awg.  As for the battery, I had it tested and they told me that it tested good but it was week.  And I never touched the alternator.

Does the starter ever have trouble turning over the forst time or does it always take multiple tries before the car starts ?

It's always a different problem with each starter.  With the first one, when I turned the key the bendix would engage and would not disengage.  With the Last one I had, it sounded like it was grinding when I started it.
