Last night, during a moderate rain storm (no thunder or lightning) the anti theft alarm went off.
I reset it by using the remote on the key, and it went off again about an hour later, this sequence kept up
until 3:00 AM. At that time I got into the car and turned on the ignition, then turned it off and left the car unlocked.
The alarm did not go off again. Today we left the car unlocked all day and don't know if the alarm went off or
not. But on the way home from work my wife stopped to pick up some thing and while in the store the alarm
went off again. When she got home the dash board light would not go off. I reinserted the ignition key turned
it on and off twice and the dashboard lights went off. The car is now in the driveway with the doors locked
and the alarm set. I am waiting to see if the problem continues. We have owned this car for 7 years and the
alarm has never gone off before.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hello Ed, first check the obvious, make sure all points of entry are completely closed and that the pin switches show no visible signs of damage. Make sure you didn't leave the dome lights on. You could also check your owner's manual for anything related to triggering the alarm or even try getting ahold of a service manual to help determine if the alarm is bad or if you have a bad trigger to avoid having to take it to a Lexus dealer (ouch!)1995 Lexus SC300 Anti theft System -- posted image.

Thanks for the input. I will check the pin switches, the dome lights are out. The owners manual tells me that the
alarm is set automatically when the doors, trunk and hood are locked. The only fuse for the system also
controls the power door locks, fuel door release and something else but I can not pull the fuse because of the
loss of power door locks. I may have to take it to Lexus since the alarm went off again this evening about a
half hour after I locked the car. I then turned on the ignition and started the engine. When I shut it down the
dashboard lights again refused to turn off. I had to turn the ignition key on and off 3 times before the dash lights
went out. The car now remains in the driveway unlocked and the alarm has not gone off for 3 hours. I tried to
get a service manual at the library but they did not have one for any Lexus. I will take it to the dealer in the morning,
I suspect the ignition lock is at fault. My fear is a $500.00 service bill and a different ignition key than the doors.
Again thank you for your input and help

I just checked for pin switch defects, there are no pin switches on the doors. The dome light comes on as
soon as I lift the door handle, could the switches be in the door handle mechanisim? or could they use a
magnetic reed type switch that is flush mounted?

Try looking under the hood for a corroded or partially grounding hood pin switch. Sometime ( it has happed to me before ) the hood pin switch gets wet and the water running down the pin switch activates the alarm because it grounds the pin switch to the frame. It took me sometime before I figured this out and replaced the " all metal " pin switch with one that had a PVC plunger and a metal casing. Problem fixed.

If this is the case, that would explain why the lights do not go out as most alarms or remote starters use the hood pin switch as their programming switch. Let us know what you find.

I could not find any pin switches for the hood. The car is now at the Lexus Dealer. I noticed on there List of
recommended services that the 60,000 mile check up is $1,109.00. My car has 65,000 miles on it it might be
cheaper to trade it in on a new Toyota than to fix the problem. Ths morning the car was completely dead. I put
it on a battery charger for 3 min. and it started right up and had no problem restarting it at the dealer. I can not
wait for their diagnosis, I will let you know what they find.
Thanks again for the suggestions and help.

Sounds like you may have a low battery problem ( just another stab in the dark ). When the battery drains to a level too low for the alarm system to operate properly, the alarm activates itself..... draining the battery even more ! I'm sure they will test the battery for you at the dealership but make sure that if they did not, to check the resting voltage of the battery. It should be 12.4 volts and no less than 11.5 volts.

Most car dealerships like to charge for the BIG service job at 60, 000 miles ( 100,000 KM ). I have an Acura that requires a $ 1000.00 tab at the local dealership too where they replace the timing belt, all the fluids, check all the components in the engine, tranny, suspension, etc , etc, etc....Good maintenance for the car..... too expensive for me though.

The battery is new (3 or 4 months old) It is a Sears International and the car started almost immediately after hooking it up to the charger. The dealer has not yet gotten back to me with a diagnosis or a price. I agree that the 60,000 mile maintenance is a good deal for the car, but I am a firm believer in not fixing things that are not broken. When ever I have done that something else that was not fixed usually breaks. So, I wait for something to break before I fix it. I will let you know what happens with the dealer.
