Is it just me, or has the last coulpe of weeks brought out the special people, you know, the ones that only come out on a full moon. I'm not talking about the usual group of experts that know better and can install better than you, but they don't have the time or shop (or money) but do have the expertise. I'm talking about the ones who want to know your qualification, work experience, government qualification, insurance coverage, financial position and want you to sign a document before you install a flashing LED in their car. Where do they come from???
Hi-lights of the last week.
High dollar professional install done by an "expert", worked great but suddenly stopped (the expert was to buzzy to fix, he was leaving town). The wire was run up the firewall, around the windshield whipper, through the hood hinge, in the fender crack and tucked under the weather stripping. It was very nicely tie wrapped and split loomed. Did I mention the fuse holder was located in the drainage "tray" that happened to be blocked and only half full of water. (It had been raining for only a couple of hours) Surprising enough, this wasn't the problem. The was an old Lanzar 50 amp powering the system, which has power/ground wire comming out of the amp. While disconneting the amp ( it was in protection) I found the amp wires butted up against the power wire. While not everyone has terminal block to make the connection, you could use some sort of connector, baring that at least strip off the insulation and try the wires together. Once I refilled the amp with smoke, and fixed the pro's install, it worked.
But I' m not sure if thats much better than the guy who came in for an hour and a half each day figuring that the part that he needed would get here faster if he lectured me on how to run a bussieness, instead of letting me get on the phone and chase the part. After the tenth day, my customer service failed, and I informed him that if he wasn't willing to pay for my trip to Japan to pick up the part, he'd have to wait, and do so without telling me how to run my bussiness. His radio had not worked for three years, now it was a rush. When it was fixed, he was beatting on the shop door at 11 pm to have it put back in. Special, overtime job.
One last piss off, we as pro's need tobe trained, certified, and insured ect. In the last week, I've seen car come in after being "detailed", 3 alarm remote start systems that were flooded with cleaner/water, two amps, same story, and a navigation system that looked liked it was on the out side of a submarine, not to mention the decks that have cleaners sprayed in them. Guess anyone with a bucket and sponge can open a detail shop, but they need to be good at avoiding responability and being cheap. Course then need stuff fixed before then customer find out. If I really wanted to trade labour, parts and warrenty issues for a car wash, I might as well work out of a dounut shop. Wish people were more carefull getting their cars clean as they are about putting the stereo's in.
Anyone else having this much fun?
