A basic 12 volt power supply (transformer) will do it- as long as it'll provide the amperage you need.

A good 12 volt power supply is not cheap. Here in the Great White North they average $500.00 for anything of substantial size to power a headunit, amp and sub system. A basic 12 volt power supply is cheap and is usually rated at 10 amps or less, so far from enough current to drive a system by any means. Cascade Audio Engineering makes some supplies, do a google search for them to see what you can find.

As long as you're not using external amps or anything, but just running speakers off a head unit (car cd player), you just need a basic 12 volt power supply.  You're maybe looking around 50 bucks American, price will vary based on your equipment's current demands.  Something like this would work:  http://www.baproducts.com/pyramid.htm.  You could always put the power supply inside a cabinet or something, and run wires from there to an outlet you install elsewhere.

It's kind of an inefficient way of doing it- it's best just to use home equipment, which is why we usually recommend doing so.
