Still haven't gotten the amp plugs for the 01 mustang...ANYWAYS, I got another ford radio problem.

Had a guy with a 98 explorer sport that he got "wholesale" or something like that, anyways the radio was missing when he got the vehicle.  It has the 71-1771 factory plug, so it needed the 70-1771 harness.  He had a radio/cd player from a 99 explorer xlt that has the long rectangular grey plug, and then the real tiny plug with the small pins in it, that's for the speaker wires.  It's not the square plug, but it's about that size. Can't find a picture of it online.  Anyways, I used a reverse harness to plug in to the radio, and a 70-1771 to plug in to the 98 explorer, and but one of the illumination wires matched up, so I capped that one off.  Then I just popped the radio into the 98 explorer.  Whenever you turn it on it would say "CALL" on it.  but when you turn the car on, that would go away and the radio works.  When you have the headlights on, however, it goes back to saying "CALL" on it.

Don't think this has anything to do with the "CALL" display, but the sound output is all messed up.  It's completely distorted, radio and CD, and the max volume isn't very loud at all.  Think he had a factory amp in the 99 explorer, and that its radio, which I am now trying to put into a 98 explorer, was made to work only with the 99 system?  Or maybe I did the harnesses wrong?

but that "CALL" thing is what really threw me off.  Any ideas about any of this?

try hooking up a different ground to the radio, this might solve the problem of "call" when the head lights come on. other than that, i think that the radio might not be compatable with the 98 explorer.  ford has crazy ways of wireing their cars makeing things harder!!!!
