The fuse on the side of my sub amp is blowing, and I don't know why.  It worked fine for months, then nothing.  All the connections are tight.  The ground is tight.  I thought it was the remote gain controller, but the fuse blows when this is disconnected, too.  The amp is fed by RCA inputs from the 4 channel amp driving the speakers, and this amp (and the speakers) are working fine.  I just bought a multimeter, but I haven't the faintest idea how to use it yet.  I think something has shorted.  How often do amps go bad?  How could I tell if the amp itself is the problem?  I tried the search tab, but didn't really get anywhere.  Thanks folks.

Turn your radio off and replace the fuse.  Pull the fuse out and check it.  If it is not blown, put it back in and turn the radio on.  Turn the radio off and pull the fuse out and check it.  I need to know when the fuse is blowing.

I would also suggest running the RCA straight from the HU instead of the daisy chain method (just to eliminate that as a possibilty).  I remember years ago that memphis studio series amps had an issue with a connection breaking loose inside that caused a similar problem with their amps, but only on the output rca connections.

Ok.  The fuse is fine with the car off.  As soon as I turn the key to the accessory position, even with the radio/HU off,  the fuse blows.

does the fuse still blow if you disconnect the speakers from the amp and then turn it on?

Yes.  I can't even get a fuse in all the way before it starts sparking, even with the engine/HU off.  I checked continuity of the grounds, the speaker wire to the sub, the RCA inputs from the other amp--all good.  I get 12V at both amps (engine/HU off).  I'm gonna start buying these fuses in bulk.

It appears as though the power supply of the amplifier has failed.  This was probably caused by shorted output transistors.  If you are willing to take it apart and do a little probing with a meter, I can tell you about how much it will cost to get it repaired.
