Hey, I'm a newbie here and i've seen dual voice coil subs and single voice coil subs. what are the characteristics of the two types? which one is better?

Everyone seems so helpful here, hopefully someone can help me out with their knowledge

This link should explain things http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/dvc/dvcAdvantage.html the main advantage is wiring flexibility. There is really not a difference in sound or performance.
