I purchased a factory CD head unit to replace my Cassette only unit that came with my 2001 Impala. I haven't removed the original radio yet, but it is my understanding that the new radio will need to be unlocked by a GM dealer. Is that true? Can I get the car's radio code from the original radio? Thx.

No you will need to take it to the dealer and have it programmed. If you plug it in it will read CAL ERROR
