I am installing an amp to run 6X9s and when I unhook the rear speakers I lose everything. The deck works, but no sound anywhere. What's up with that?

when u say unhook the rear speakers.....what exactly do you mean?  are u cutting them behind the head unit or disconnecting them from the speaker terminals?  im not sure how the factory amplified system is in that car, but i know the amp(s) have to be bypassed for a new headunit unless you buy a factory amp interface.

I unhooked the speaker terminals and tied them into the high level input to the amp. No sound. I unplugged the high input to the amp, no sound. When I reconnected the speaker terminals I got my sound back.

yeah you cant unhook the rear speakers and put them into the amp hilevel input.  that will short out stuff and thats why all your speakers stopped working.  use an LOC you have to.  and use a T-tap to tap into the rear spekaer wires and everything should work.
