I have a 1984 Lincoln Towncar with Ford's Premium Sound system, I am replacing the cassette with a Pioneer DEH-15 cd receiver, the oem system has 6 speakers, 2  3 1/2" tweeters in the dash,  6 1/2" speakers in the front doors, and  6 x 9 speakers in the rear,  i am replacing the door and rear speakers but the leads are not marked + or -, no capacators on the speakers, how do i find out which is positive or negative?  And can i use the six speakers with a 4-channel receiver? If not i was thinking of unplugging the tweeters in the dash.  As you can see, newbieeeeee !

Simple dude, remove the rear speakers and put them on your bench/ counter/ friends hands whatever. Make a note of what color wire was hooked to what terminal on the speaker you removed. Next take a small battery (AA up to 9V). Put two new wires onto the speaker and place the speaker on it's magnet, not on it's face. Touch 1 wire to the negative terminal on the battery and hold it there. This will not damage the speaker. Now touch and only touch the other wire to the positive terminal on the battery. The speaker cone will make a POP sound and will move in one direction. If the cone moves outwards then the wire that you touched to the positive terminal on the battery is the positive speaker lead. If the speaker moves inward then the other speaker wire is the positive lead. Now remember what color wire was hooked up to that speaker, now you know what wire is the positive.

I don't see whay you couldn't use all 6 speakers, just make sure that the front speakers are wired together in parallel. See the column about parallel wiring. Any aftermarket cd player is capable of running a system like this.

Lincolns usually use a solid color and a striped wire for speakers.  The striped wire is negative.

"Premium Sound" in Ford products usually means there is a factory amp somewhere.  This will need to be bypassed for your new setup to function properly.  I'm not familiar with teh 84 Town Carm but I would look for the amp under the front passenger seat, on the underside of the rear deck, or in the front kick panels.  Somebody in the Lincoln Owners Club will know.  Check them out at www.lcoc.org.

The tweeters in the dash will most likely not function once the factory amp is bypassed.  Ford OEM tweeters are usually pretty poor quality paper cones rated at about 4 watts.  I would simply disconnect them and not bother trying to use or replace them.
