Compression piston subs use a flat driver "cone" instead of the convex cone in a traditional woofer and a different type of voice coil.  Compression drivers have been used for years in professional sound reinforcement for high-frequency horn speakers.   As low-frequency drivers, they have recently come into vogue because of their relatively high efficiency and relatively high output levels.  They are pure SPL drivers, IMO, as they are not very precise and tend to have lots of noise in higher (ie: unintended) frequencies.  They're good for boom, bad for music.  In my opinon, that is.
