I have a 98 ford contour w/ factory amp. I recently installed an Aiwa cdc-x207. I got it all hooked up and it works fine with the exception of 2 minor problems.

I am 99% positive I have the amp wired wrong and that is what is causing these problems. (yes I hard wired the unit)

I have been searching the web for a couple of hours. I have searched this site and gathered the wiring diagram for my car but, it doesn't tell me the amp colors.

If anyone has the wiring specs for the amp I would appreciate a link or an email.

I am looking for colors to identify 12+, ( - ), switched 12, etc. for the amp.

Thanx in advance.

Tell me if this looks right (scroll down to the amplified harness):

If this does not help, since you have an amplified system, the diagrams you find may not be correct.  The best thing to do in this case is go to a sound shop, look in their metra book, and find the correct adapter.  This way you can identify the pinouts correctly, without a whole lot of brain work.  If you still have the plugs, can you not connect them with your factory deck and test for power. ground, and turn-on lead at the amp itself?  You can always bypass the amp all together as well.  I just wanted to give you a few things to consider so you can decide which is best for you.

One thing I forgot to mention is I've read (I think in here) sometimes if you open the amp, the circuit board will be labeled identifying your leads.  I hope this helps.

thanx for the info but, unfortunately, the diagram in that link says "do not use for this vehicle" for the amp power leads. To to reply to whats wrong? well. it pops when you touch any button for the first time after start up. After that no problems. it sounds like the amp popping. secondly the stereo will keep playing the CD even though the car is turned off. The unit is a cheapy. Aiwa cdc-x207. I've tried Aiwa and they can't help and i searched everywhere on this site before posting. I think I'm going to remove it and bypass the wiring because it seems to be impeding my system. I have 360 watt 6x8's and they sound the same as the factory speakers did. This makes me believe that something is up with that amp. I'll keep you guys posted and let you know how it goes.

OK I never try to abandon a forum so I apologize to anyone who has been waiting for my results. Here they are. Please keep in mind that this was written so that everyone could understand so if it sounds repetative, it's because I want to make sure the amatuer and the pro, both understand what I am saying.

I went out and purchased the metra wiring harnesses for both stereo and car. When I was finished installing these harnesses I got the same problem I had before.

-------------------------------

NOTE #1:

The amp in a 98 ford contour can only handle a maximum of 40 x 4. (160 max. watts overall.) If your stereo has a higher output than that, you will not get any sound.

-------------------------------

My recommendation from my reseach would suggest to look at the pre amp output (lows) power rating spec. on any stereo over 40x4. The low outs may actually have a lower power rating. Like my Aiwa cdc-x207. 45x4 through the highs and I think about 80 watts per low ouput, Which since it is a 2 channel output, each channel would have to be split in half which would give you 40w / channel x 2 channels, per each low.

In other words, One 80w RCA wire that has to feed 2 speakers, will feed 40 w to each speaker. If you have two 80w RCA wires, then respectively you could feed 4 speakers at 40w each and this would be just under the amp limit at 40x4.

so basically what you want to do is buy the corresponding metra connector harness for your head unit (stereo) application and for 1998 ford contours with the premium amplified system you want to buy either 80-5511 or 70-5511. Please keep in mind that these are not the same harnesses but they do the same thing.

The amplifier bypass harness number is 70-5605. This is a newer harness So the number may not be recognizable to some. I obtained this number directly from metra and was told it could be ordered.

You can use 70-5605 in place of 80-5511 / 70-5511

---------------------------

NOTE #2

If you decide to use 80-5511 you will have to splice your lows (RCA cables) from the stereo into the 80-5511 harness.

---------------------------

My setup consists of the following:

Aiwa cdc-x207 head unit connected to

AW-1680 which is connected to

80-5511 which is connected to

factory harnesses.

I cut and spliced my RCA cables from the stereo into the speaker wires in the 80-5511 harness. I get sound now but, it sounds a little crackly when turned up too high. This is because of the amplifier still existing in my setup without being bypassed. I have the bypass harness on order for my car and I will post those results as well as instructions for wiring when I install it.

If anyone has any questions you may post them here or email me at 91rs4life@comcast.net. Entitle your email "from 12volt forum" so I know what you're talking about.
