Great site, I'm glad I stumbled across it, although, its prevented me from getting any work done today.

I have an 01 GMC Sierra 1500 Ext Cab w/Stock head unit.  I am replacing the speakers as phase 1 of my upgrade project (left front was blown thats why speakers are happenning before the head unit).  I've searched on the site and found a couple of different views on what I want to do.

I purchased Infinity Kappa 60.5cs components for the front and will use Infinity's 4X6 plates for the rears.  The rears seem to be pretty straight forward, however, I am ready to do the fronts and not sure how I should be wiring them.

Everything I've read says that the tweets and mids are seperate straight out of the head unit (no external crossover). The infinitys come with a crossover.  I'm not sure if I should be splicing the wires to the tweets/mids before running into the crossover then coming out to each speaker?  Or just using the wires for the mids into the crossover then out to the new tweets/mids, and leaving the original tweeter wires alone.

My plan is to replace the head unit in the near future so I'm not sure which option sets me up best for that either.

Also, I'd be interested in any suggestions for how to mount the crossover in the door.

Thanks in advance

No, you should just use the wire coming from the factory mids and connect it to the crossovers input. Then from there run some better speaker cable from the crossover to the midrange and tweeter. Im not sure how you would mount the crossovers in the door. They usually go under the seat. If you put them under the seat(which might be easier) then I would then splice the wire going to the midrange in the door and run new wire from there to the crossover. Then from the crossover under the seat run seperate wires to the Infinity midrange and tweeter in the door. Also I would look at buying an external amp soon because even an aftermarket head-unit cant power your new component speakers as well as a good external amp can. Even if you dont like it loud and external amp will bring out all the performance in your speakers even at low volumes.

I would run new speaker wires from the crossovers into the doors, mounting the crossover inside the vehilce. If you are in an environment that has any kind of hot - cold or rain, condensation that builds up in the door will destroy most crossovers in no time flat. I cannot tell you of the number of crossover I have replaced over the years due to this fact. If you are planning on upgrading to an amp, this also is a much easier way to do your future upgrades. Have you taken the head unit out to verify the type of wiring plug on the back? Is the stock system a delco bose amplified system. Chances are that if this is a basic head unit, the door tweeters are connected in parallel to the door midrange drivers, thus only one pair of speaker wires will be found behind the factory head unit.
Top Secret, I can tell you but then my wife will kill me.
