Hey guys, im not too sure what its called, but what advantages/disadvantages are there to mounting the subwoofer, where the basket is exposed, rather than normally mounted? Is that possible with any woofer?

Advantage: looks cool, enclosure can be somewhat smaller

Disadvantages: Dangerous to the woofer (could be damaged), must wire out of phase with the rest of the system, harder to find a good location in the vehicle

Any woofer: Sure.

Since you will be listening to the sound coming from the back side of the cone instead of from the front, you have to connect the + amp lead to the - speaker terminal (and vice versa.)  This way, the sub will be moving oposite from the other speakers in your car, but the sound you hear will be in phase.  Does this make sense to you?

Any sub can be mounted this way.  Just build the enclosure as you normally would for the sub, and SUBTRACT the volume of the inside of the cone from the volume of the box (since the speaker is now "part of" the box..)  The idea is to use one that has a really sharp looking basket and magnet structure that you want to show off.  Your MA's look pretty good on the back sides.
