I was browsing through a car audio catalog today and found some Linear Compression Subs, and was wondering what the difference between them and other subs are (besides the higher price tag), and how they work, what the advantages/disadvantages of them are.

They work like pistons.  They are speakers with flat cones.  Advantage = high SPL with relatively low power input, and ability to generate sub-sonic frequencies with ease.  Disadvantage = non-existent (or nearly so) SQ.
