hello out there, i'm just wondering if anyone know if there is a special way to turn on an eclipse 8051 head unit. i had got it from a guy who said that i did not have to worry about a security code or anything. so when i hooked up the unit, the knob lights had a nice glow. but the screen in the middle never lit up. i was able to hit the eject button and open the motorized face and insert a cd.  i looked through the holes on top of the unit and saw that the cd was spinning. but i could not figure out how to operate it because the screen in the center is not coming on and i don't have a manual. every button on the face had beeped when pushed except the "custom" button. i did hear feedback through my subs and at one time i could of sworn i heard "hiss" from my mids and hi's. could someone please help me with some operating instructions? thank you. merl

Well, all I can say is when you "get it from some guy" you should also "get" the owners manual and the ESN disk and make sure it works before you buy it.  The 8051 requires outboard amplification, which I assume you know?

actually it still had its rca's on it. 2 "line-out"'s and a nonfader. i spoke to an eclipse tech from the 800 number. he said there should been a silver box attached to some cable. he told me the first time that the silver box was for the lights that were missing in the center screen of the unit. i called again and asked what was the orange illumination wire for and the tech said "that's for your backlight." and i said, "for the light in your car?"  "no, for the unit." and i had told him the tech i spoke to there earlier was saying that the silver box was illumination. he then said, "that was me!" so i got confused. somehow i requested to get repaired. i will tho, give the serial number to them and see if it's a lost cause. thanks guys@12v!

The little silver box is the power supply for the display, it provides higher voltage for the flouesent display.  The orange wire is as the tech said, for illumination.  What he meant is when you turn your dash lights on, the wire gets a signal, and dims the display so it is not as visable in the dark.
