Good afternoon everyone! I have what may be a dumb question to some but when you think about it, this is not something most people do on a daily basis.

My question is what is the correct way to "measure" a speaker?

Example: Say my car takes 6.5" speakers in the doors, do you measure from the outer metal edge to the outer metal edge of the speaker or do you measure from the outer edge of the foam to the outer edge of the foam on the speaker itself?

Thanks in advance!!!

Measure the outer diameter from edge to edge of the basket.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I have measured the speakers that I purchased to replace the busted factory speakers and even though it says on the box that they are 6.5" speakers they measure to be 6" across. I measured them by locating holes directly across from one another and measured (across the holes, using them as a guide) from the outer edge to outer edge of the basket. They measure exactly 6". Is this how they are supposed to be or could this be a mistake on the manufacturers part? If this is how they are supposed to be then why do they not fit the factory cut wholes in the doors of my car, especially when The12Volt and every other manual, online information and factory dealer says that the doors need 6.5" speakers?

The vehicle these are to go in is: 1993 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Don't know if that helps the visual or not.Correct way to measure a speaker? -- posted image.

Any clarification on this issue is appreciated. Thanks.

The Jeeps use a 6.5" speaker ( yes that is correct ) BUT the Grand Cherokee's speakers have 3 extension tabs that hold the speakers in place. If you were to have measured the OEM speakers then you would see that the diameter is 6" or 6.5 " but with the tabs holding the speakers to the doors you looking at more like 7.5" from hole to hole. What you can do is get a pice of ABS plastic from any hardware store or your local stereo shop and cut a square section that will encompass the entire area of the speaker ( including the 3 holes ) and drill in the screw holes. Now take the inside diameter of the speaker and cut the hole out for this measurement and mount this template to the 3 holes in the door. Take the speaker and mount to the ABS plastic and hook up the speaker and your done. Do this to all 4 doors as they all have this type of speaker installation.
