does anyone know how much air space i need for a sealed enclosure for a jl audio 10w3 ?

are they older 10 w3's or are they new or are they 10w3v2? let me know that and I can tell you

the older ones, i found a forum posting saying .65 cubic feet, does that sound right?

for the DVC model yes thats right for a space save sealed enclousure. realy I would go with about .85. Or vent

what size would you go with in a ported enclosure, and what size port? the box is going in a hatchback, and im looking more for a good sounding box as opposed for bass heavy

The better sounding box is probably going to be sealed. Ported enclosures are more efficient when it comes to low frequency output, but this is at the sacrifice of control. The sound starts sounding boomy and once down to a certain frequency, the woofer is actually running "free-air". And have you ever heard woofers mounted free-air?

For 10W3-D2, optimum sealed: 0.625 cu. ft. ........ ported: 1.0 cu. ft.

For 10W3-D4 sealed: 0.625 ....... ported: 1.25 cu. ft.

For 10W3-D6 sealed: 0.75 cu. ft. ......... ported: 1.25 cu. ft.

Im gonna go ahead and say no to that one. I have never had a properly vented box make a sub sound like it is in free air...Maybe pre fab boxes sound like garbage and boomy. but if you build your own you can be very impressed with what you can do

Look at home subwoofers. Inexpensive ones are always ported because this design makes better use of the cheaper low-power amps. The higher quality subs are almost always sealed.
