Gain setting and extra power

If i have a 500rms subwoofer and a 1000w amp, can I still put it on there and just set the gains lower? If and once the gains are set properly, are there any negatives or disadvantages to having that certain speaker on that certain amp (ie overheating etc). Just reiiterating and trying to be positive, thanks

yes and yes (well actually 1 ohm, and the actual wattage is 1000 and 1500 respectively, but i was just doing a generalization)

As long as the sub isnt reaching the point of distortion, then you should be ok.

Awright, two Aluminums for 1000 watts RMS, and the Cadence pushing 1500 watts.  I don't see any problems there.  When you adjust gain, use a good test tone and DMM, and be careful to set gain at 1000 watts.  It should be 31.6 AC volts if you're running at a 1-ohm load.  If you get to 38.7 volts, you've reached the 1500 watt mark... too much.  Do it carefully and you should have a nice clean setup.Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
