anyone ever heard of the remote wire only working when the radio is on not when playing a cd? amp works fine when playing the radio but turns off when on aux or cds. then if i go back to the radio it turns the amp back on. it seems kind of odd. would it be inappropriate to splice the remote wire in with the accessory to the headunit?

This seems to be an issue in cars with the remote antenna wires. What u need to do is run ur remote amplifier wire off the switch wire, not the remote antenna wire. The antenna wire is used to amplifiy the signal of FM ratio and thusly doesn't provide a good and effective remote wire for an amplifier.

Many different brands use a RADIO ONLY Power Antennea wire for POWERING the Power antennea.  When the C.D. or Tape is on the Antennea goes down or Power goes off.  Use Ignition wire or check to see if there is another Power wire on radio

the whole concept behind a Tuner Activated Power Antenna circuit is that many consumers ( myself included ) dont want their antenna up all the time, ( wear and tear, wind noise, etc )  when 85 % of the time they listen to CD's so the circuit is designed to raise the antenna only when the radio is playing... using this wire as a remote turn on  for an amp will result in the same situation... amp is on with radio but shuts off with disc or cassette...

in cases like these always use the dedicated Amplifier Remote Turn on Lead instead of the Power antenna lead, as this circuit provides 12 volts when both the radio and the other media formats are playing....
