1994 toyota corolla, no sound

a few days ago i was attempting to install a cd player in place of the factory tape deck that came with the car.  (much thanks to this site for gettin the correct wiring diagram when i searched it) anyhow, everything was working good.  as i was finishing mounting it how i wanted and stuffing the wires around behind the scenes i somehow had some wires come loose (i had to splice them as the previous owner apparently had a cd player in at some point and had cut the original connectors for the audio off) and one of them touched the cd player.. this created a nice spark which led to blowing of a fuse... frustrated i respliced and made it stay this time and put everything back together as i was tired and it was late... the next day i replaced all the fuses in my car for the hell of it and the stereo would get power but would not fully turn on...after messin with it i got it to power up only when the headlights are on but no sound would come through the speakers. i can use all the options on the cd player and such but no sound at all...i am using factory speakers at the moment btw.  tonight i had some time and copmletely respliced all the wires tryin to get something to work with a little hope or somethint but it failed......  so all in all - my stereo wont fully turn on until the headlights are on and then when it is on i get no sound comin through the speakers...i can however hear through the speakers a slight whurrrrr noise and when i load a cd i can hear another noise in the speakers....

It sounds as if you:

1. have it wired wrong, possibley using the illumintation wire for switched power. 2. possibley fried the headunit in the process.

I would recomend taking it in to audio shop before you damage anything else, it will be money well spent.
